Picnic in the shadow of the giant statues of Villa Demidoff
Pratolino is a small village about 10km north of Florence and it is home to the Parco Demidoff. The park is full of wide open spaces punctuated by fascinating statues, fountains and follies. The most famous is the Colosso dell'Appennino (1579–1580), by Giambologna (see picture). It is, as the name suggests, huge and imposing – a dramatic figure cut into a rock face that is so big it seems like an act of nature.
The park is the ideal spot for a picnic, you can always find a private spot to relax, wander round and just get lost for an afternoon. The entry fee for the park is quite cheap (not sure exactly how much this year) and it is very easy to get to. For more info about the history of the Villa, the park and all the rest of it, try Wikipedia.
