Your Codice
Fiscale is the Italian
equivalent of Social Security or National Insurance number. It is a
code made up of your name, d.o.b, place of birth etc. You need a
Codice Fiscale in
order to do almost anything in Italy, so if you are staying for any
more than a holiday, it is worth getting immediately.
You
can calculate what your code will be at a website such as this,
but in order to pick up your card, you will need to present yourself
at the Ufficio delle Entrate with your passport and or your
Permesso di Soggiorno. The code alone should be enough to rent
a cell phone or get a movie rental membership, though this is not a
guarentee and you will need the card to open a bank account
