Is there a place open to the public where you can play a pickup game of softball/baseball?

There are plenty of places to play catch. The ample space at Cascine, the concrete oven of Piazza Gioberti, there's a nice little park by the river right below Piazzale Michelangelo...

...if you're looking for a proper field to play a game on though, i'm afraid your probably out of luck. Two fields that i know of where you could watch games are Ceretti (next to the stadium) and two fields in Sesto Fiorentino (take the 28 bus from Santa Maria Novella until the end of the line.)
